Born to a single mother on the rough world of Carratos, Kerrek was orphaned at an early age and pressed into the service of one of the larger gangs that plagued the planet. At the age of 14, while being mentored by one of the gang’s gearheads, their hideout came under attack by a rival gang. Kerrek hid while his friends were dying. At the end of the fighting the only ones left standing were 3 members of the rival gang. As they were leaving Kerrek burst out of hiding, and, grabbing his mentor’s pistol, fired off 3 shots, killing two of the thugs and maiming the third; giving him a very distinctive scar.
For the next two years Kerrek trained himself so he could track down this man and put another shot right between his eyes. Following an extended manhunt (lasting the better part of a year), Kerrek finally tracked the man down, and achieved his vengeance. Little did he know that a bounty had been placed on the man’s head, and a hunter named Joran Kassel had been targeting him as well. After Kerrek had secured the kill, Joran came to him with an offer. Because Kerrek was not a licensed bounty hunter he couldn’t claim the bounty, so Joran proposed that he turn in the bounty, split it (with Joran getting a bigger cut), and in return he would work with Kerrek to shape up his investigative skills, and help him obtain his bounty hunting license. Around the time Kerrek obtained his license and finished his training, the Empire came to Carratos in full force to tame the brutal planet, establishing a garrison and issuing a “shoot on sight” edict.
With that edict, Kerrek and Joran decided to beat town and make their way offplanet. Over the next couple of years they made their way to the Brentaal system and then on to Denon, taking on small hunts and honing Kerrek’s skills. Along the way Kerrek was motivated to always bring his target in alive, as this was usually more lucrative. At Denon, Kerrek and Joran parted ways with a handshake. With enough creds to make his way to Tatooine and contact info for a Hutt gang leader named Teemo, Kerrek hopped on a transport.
